It has very little roadwork, a bit along the beach, the rest across fields and through woods. It starts in sight of Alnwick Castle and makes its way across Northumberland Estates land (mostly not on bridleways) to the sea at Boulmer. It then goes north along a grassy path along the coast before turning inland for the return route. The distance is 16 miles with a cut off for those who want a shorter route of 8 miles. Practically all the gates will be opened.
